Where the lines
come from

Every reflection here is drawn from a public-domain translation, checked against its source. No paraphrase, no invention. These are the editions that did the work.

Nothing on this site is mine to claim. Each line was set down by someone else, often centuries ago, and carried into English by a translator whose work has since passed into the public domain. I have kept their names, their editions, and their years intact, because that is the least a borrowed line is owed.

The library draws on several distinct translations and editions. Here they are, quietly, in one place.

If a line stays with you, the source is worth more than the fragment. The whole work is out there, free, waiting in its own slow language.
